1938年8月24日茨城県水戸生まれ。1961年東京藝術大学音楽学部作曲科卒業。1963年同学部専攻科修了。作曲を下総皖一および池内友次郎に師事。東京藝術大学音楽学部教授を務め、2006年に退官。東京藝術大学名誉教授、日本現代音楽協会名誉会員。2026年9月21日、88歳で逝去。

1961年 日本音楽コンクール作曲部門第1位入賞(交響曲第1番)、併せて特別作曲賞を受賞。
1964年 芸術祭賞(文部省主催)。
1972年 トリノ市賞受賞。
1975年 イタリア賞音楽部門グランプリ(イタリア放送協会主催)。
1983年 芸術祭大賞(文化庁主催)。

●管弦楽作品:交響曲第1〜4番、交響的変容、ソプラノと管弦楽のための交響的瞑想「死の淵より」、管弦楽のためのラプソディー、管弦楽のためのバラード、ピアノと管弦楽のための「嬉遊曲」、ピアノ協奏曲、ヴァイオリン協奏曲、交響詩「北の大地」、交響3部作「甲斐」、管弦楽のための変奏曲、混声合唱と管弦楽のためのカンタータ「土の歌」
●合唱作品:合唱組曲「蔵王」 ほか多数
混声合唱と管弦楽のためのカンタータ「土の歌」(1962年)の終曲「大地讃頌」は、学校教育などを通じて広く親しまれ、現在も日本の合唱を代表する作品の一つとして、世代を超えて歌い継がれている。

Cantata “Tsuchi no Uta” (Song of the Soil) for mixed chorus and orchestra (1962). Its final movement, “Daichi Sansho” (Ode to the Earth), became widely known and cherished as a choral work, particularly through its use in schools throughout Japan, and has continued to be sung by generations of students.
